My 1st MTG Draft
I finally went to my first “drafting” experience a few weeks ago for the 2011 Core Set pre-release. Actually this was not a real “draft”, but more a “limited sealed” event where you get 6 packs and you make a minimum 40 card deck out of that. At first I was really excited since the store owner told me players were pretty “casual” and just really enjoyed the game. I figured I had played enough by then to know what I was doing, right?? Well, the minute I got my 6 packs and started opening them, I started panicking. I was seriously having a freak out moment b/c there I was sitting in front of 6 opened packs with no idea what to do next. I started carefully looking at the cards and the guy across from me said, “Are you actually READING the cards??”. Eek! More panicking. I had no idea what color to choose, how many colors to go with, and what cards were considered “good” enough to build a deck around!! I did however pull an Ajani mythic rare in my very first pack, which I was really excited about. I was about to start making a white/black deck w/the Ajani, but then the guy across from me started being nosy and asking to look at my cards. He then told me that I should really go with red/green since I got some really good cards in that color. Sigh! So in the end, I did a red/green deck since I did pull a huge red dragon, Llanowar Elf, and Birds of Paradise (all the geeks were jealous!).
Game 1 – Me vs. snobby nerd
Why is it that some nerds talk like they’re from the medieval times? I felt like he was narrating my game the whole time. He said things like “I will pass the turn to you” and even did a very formal hand gesture. He talked about his awesome dice within a dice and announced every creature he cast with some descriptive adjective. He even sounded just like the comic guy from The Simpsons! Anyhow, I lost 2-0 due to a Grave Titan and Overwhelming Stampede (TWICE!!), but in the end, he did help me out by giving me some advice and improving my deck a little bit.
Game 2 – Me vs. bratty kid
It’s definitely weird playing a tournament against a 12 year old kid. Wow, what an experience. I’m not sure why, but all his friends kept saying “You’re going to get owned!!!” the minute I sat down. I think the fact that I’m a girl and that I was at that event made everyone assume I totally knew what I was doing? Anyhow, this kid totally killed me with flying. And every time he would pull out a big card like Armored Ascension, he would start cackling like a crazy witch! And then he would say things like “BYE BYE!!” in a high pitched voice when he was about to do something crazy. Or maybe that was his normal pre-pubescent voice? haha. He toned it down in the 2nd game when I destroyed him, but in the end, he got me 2-1.
Game 3 – Me vs. normal guy
Hooray! Finally someone more “normal”. It was a close game but I still lost 2-0. This guy was really cool and I felt like we could have been buddies if I were in high school.
All in all, I loved the experience. Even though it was actually more educational than fun, I’d definitely go back for more.
