A Girl and Her AT-AT

When I think about my adolescence, I have to say that I was a pretty late bloomer. But I’m not talking about myself in a physical sense. More about the fact that I didn’t become a Star Wars fan until I started high school. I’m not sure why I was barely exposed to Star Wars as a kid, but the minute I finally saw the whole trilogy, I was in love and decided to borrow it and watch it over and over again. I even had it playing in the background while I did my homework. So when someone told me that the Oakland container cranes were the basis for the AT-AT Walkers, which also happens to be my favorite vehicle in Star Wars, I never looked at them the same way again. Unfortunately, this myth has since been debunked and the AT-AT Walkers are actually based on the Paraceratherium, an extinct rhino-like creature.

My love of AT-ATs is one of the main reasons I wanted to check out Loakal, the store I mentioned in my previous post. This shirt describes the exact feeling I had every time I saw those cranes and even though it was just a myth, in my head it’s still true. Although It’s really hard to believe that those cranes didn’t influence George Lucas and his team just a little bit, I know that every time I drive across the Bay Bridge, I’m going to imagine those cranes coming to life and walking in the waters of the bay.
