I Am Groot (Making of Baby Groot)
Like many, I loved the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. And I knew it was love when I heard “I’m Not in Love” start playing in the first few minutes. GOTG incorporated everything I enjoyed in a movie – the ’80s, an awesome soundtrack, great characters, and a quirky sense of humor. The moment the movie ended, I was already itching to make some sort of fan art. I just didn’t know what – until I came across one of Funko’s toy posts where they showed this custom Baby Groot! I was so inspired to make my own version of Baby Groot and here’s what I came up with.
After a big Worbla project, you always end up with massive amounts of scraps so this was a great way to make use of them! I decided to base his head more on Funko’s adorable version.
The body was covered with “spaghetti” Worbla.
Then I added the arms and fingers. I added a lot of the “tree” details on the face by using a carving tool (or a simple butter knife will work).
Next, I primed and painted everything!
Of course, Groot needed a home so I gave him a simple small pot with some dirt and moss. To keep Groot from falling over, I attached him to some Worbla “legs”, and stuck those in a styrofoam block, which I then stuffed into the pot. Then I added dirt and moss to cover up the base.
WE ARE GROOT! :)
