San Diego Comic-Con 2023
It’s been a strange couple of years of San Diego Comic-Con so let’s recap.
2019 – another awesome SDCC. Camped out for Hall H again and it was a blast.
2020 – SDCC is shut down.
2021 – SDCC during Thanksgiving? No thanks.
2022 – We’re back at Comic-Con! But it’s definitely a little more quiet than usual. Lots of us still wearing masks, but the spirit is still there.
Now let’s talk about 2023. The WGA/SAG strike happens about a week before SDCC starts, which drastically changes a lot of the panels for the show. Normally big booths are suddenly smaller or non-existent and lots of people (including myself) have no idea what we can/can’t post and what we can/can’t cosplay. There are things on the schedule, but there’s no other way to put it except that we know it’s going to be an odd year at the con. Everyone is starting to say that this year is going to be like “the good ol days” of SDCC, but will it?
A week before SDCC, I wasn’t even sure I wanted to attend, but like every year, I’m so glad I went. I was kind of relieved not to have a crazy schedule for once or have a million things I wanted to see and instead could really enjoy the floor, spend time with friends, and for once even have a nice dinner in downtown San Diego! Like really have dinner – I actually sat down with friends for 2.5 hours in a nice restaurant next to the con! There’s a first for everything.
I hit up a lot of the booths I normally do and for once felt like I really saw everything on the con floor. I went to some of the panels I typically go to – Spotlight on Jim Lee and Animation Show of Shows… and I was super excited to see that Colleen Atwood (multiple Academy Award winner for costumes) was going to be there doing a panel on her work! Meeting her was pretty incredible. Of course I also went to the Her Universe Fashion Show, which I can’t believe is already in their 9th year! Was it that long ago that I was in the show? Wow, time flies.
But probably my favorite thing I did was just getting to spend time with friends. It wasn’t just like “Hi, good to see you, catch you later!”, but I actually got to hang out, have drinks, share some food, and of course wait in some lines together.
Oh! And it’s been a while , but I even brought out some old cosplays! I took it easy and wore Miles Morales from the comics and knew I wanted to say hi to Babs Tarr so I brought out the punk Chun-Li that was based off of her art work. I know I don’t cosplay as much as I used to, but when I do, it really reminds me how much I miss it!
Till next year San Diego!
